Collection: Wall Lights External

Explore our Wall Lights External collection to find the perfect weatherproof wall lights for your outdoor space while enjoying low prices, a five-star service and careful delivery.

Our Wall Lights External collection is packed with designer wall lights built to beautifully illuminate your outside world while resisting the worst the weather can throw at them.

Every light you see listed has been hand-picked by us because it has the required ingress protection rating to allow it to be used safely outside.

Weather Proofing

If you’re looking for exterior wall lights for your home, we offer two different Ingress Protection (IP) ratings:

·         IP54

·         IP65

To help you decide which is right for you, we’ve included a brief explanation below, keeping in mind that the higher the rating then the higher the cost.

All our IP54-rated external wall lights offer the following standards of protection:

1.       Partial protection against dust and other particulates, such that any ingress will not damage or impede the satisfactory performance of internal components

2.       Protection against splashing water from any direction, tested for a minimum of 10 minutes with an oscillating spray (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects)

This isn’t the highest form of protection but is likely to be sufficient if the wall where these lights will be located is reasonably sheltered or it’s under the eaves of a building.

When it comes to IP65-rated external wall lights, they offer the following protection:

1.       Full protection against dust and other particulates, including a vacuum seal, tested against continuous airflow.

2.       Protection against low-pressure jets (6.3mm) of directed water from any angle (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects)

As you can tell, this is a step up and what some consider to offer sufficient protection to be considered “waterproof”.

You would look for IP65-rated external wall lights if you were planning to position your wall light in a particularly exposed location regularly exposed to wind and rain, or if you just want extra for peace of mind.

You can find out more about IP ratings on the IEC – International Electromechanical Commission website.

Materials and Finish Options

All of the lighting in our Wall Lights External collection features metal or aluminium construction to ensure quality and longevity.

The metal lights feature coatings to keep them protected but if you’re particularly concerned about corrosion, perhaps because you’re in a coastal location, then we’d recommend selecting aluminium.

All the wall lights in our collection come with at least a two-year guarantee so you have peace of mind that they will offer lasting performance.

Wall Light Brightness

Our Wall Lights External collection offers a huge range of brightness levels to suit a range of tasks, particularly if you’re wanting wall lights for outdoor home use.

To help your decision-making and provide context for different light levels, we’ve included a very rough guide below, which plots the lumens you need against typical outdoor use cases:

Brightness Level

Lumens (lm)

Use Cases

Low

100-300

Pathway marker, decorative garden lighting, soft porch lighting

Low/Medium

300-800

Small wall lights, entryway lights, porch sconces

Medium

800-1500

Porch and patio lighting, driveway lighting, stair lights

Medium/High

1500-2500

Security lighting (motion sensors), garage lighting, larger garden lights

High

2500-5000

Floodlights for security, driveway and parking area lights, outdoor sports court lighting (small courts)

Very High

5000+

Stadium lighting, large area floodlights, streetlights

You can find out the brightness level of our wall lights by checking the product descriptions.

However, if you don’t see any mention of brightness or lumens, that just means that particular wall light doesn’t come with a bulb and it’s up to you to choose one.

In those circumstances, look in the product description for the maximum watts listed to get an idea of how much light it will produce.

To help you understand how many lumens are generated for different watt ratings, we’ve prepared a table below based on different bulb types:

Brightness Level

Lumens (lm)

Select Your Ambiance

The majority of our Wall Lights External collection is designed to deliver lighting with a warm appearance, which is what most people want.

However, some people prefer a whiter or cooler light, which is important if lighting is to enable the performance of certain tasks.

You can identify the ambiance generated by any of our exterior wall lights by reviewing the product descriptions.

Where there are references to “colour temperature”, look for values at or around “3,000 Kelvin” for a warmer feel.

If you specifically want a cooler or more neutral white light, look for values around “4,000 Kelvin” or higher.

If colour temperature isn’t listed then lightbulbs aren’t included with that particular outdoor wall light. It’s then up to you to pick the lightbulb you want to deliver the colour temperature – and therefore ambiance or feel – you want in your outside spaces.

FAQs

What light is best for outdoor lights?

LED lights are the best choice for outdoor lighting due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, and durability in various weather conditions. Look for IP-rated lights of IP54 or, for better weather protection, IP65 or higher.

Do you need an electrician to fit wall lights in the UK?

If the wall lights require new wiring or connection to the mains, a qualified electrician should install them. However, if you're simply replacing an existing light fitting, a competent DIYer can usually do it safely.

Do you need an electrician to fit wall lights in Ireland?

Yes, for new electrical installations or modifications to existing wiring, a registered electrician should carry out the work to comply with Irish electrical safety regulations. Replacing an existing wall light, however, can sometimes be done without an electrician.

How do you hang outdoor lights on a wall?

Secure the light fixture to the wall using appropriate mounting brackets and screws, ensuring it aligns with existing wiring. For plug-in lights, use weatherproof clips or adhesive hooks, and for wired lights, ensure connections are properly sealed against moisture.

How much does it cost to install outdoor wall lights in the UK?

The cost varies based on complexity, but a standard installation by an electrician typically costs £50-£150 per light, depending on wiring requirements and location.

How much does it cost to install outdoor wall lights in Ireland?

Installation costs in Ireland range from €70-€200 per light, depending on wiring, accessibility, and electrician fees. Additional work, such as installing new wiring, may increase the cost.

Does an IP rating mean the light is waterproof?

No. It indicates the level of protection a light has to dust and water ingress but doesn’t necessarily mean it has the required level of protection to make it waterproof. IP ratings of IP65, 66 and 67 are considered to be waterproof but these are only under certain conditions. Find out more about what these mean on the IEC – International Electromechanical Commission website. https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings
