If you want a relaxing, mellow light for a living room or bedroom then consider ceiling lighting fittings such as the Bergamo Translucent Ceiling Lamp In White, the Basic Form Pendant Lamp With Gold Styling, or the Nostalgia Ceiling Lamp With Gold Styling.

For a slightly brighter and more direct light, consider the Rida Ceiling Lamp In White – Large, the Radiance Ceiling Lamp With Gold Styling or the Rim Ceiling Lamp With Brass Styling – Cool Tones.

However, before you buy, it’s important to understand if the ceiling lights for your room are going to be bright enough.

While this can be subjective, we’ve prepared a rough guide (below) to give you an idea of how much light you need for common use cases based on lumens, which is a measure of brightness:

Brightness Level

Lumens (lm)

Use Cases

Low

100-300

Night lights, accent lighting, mood lighting (decorative lamps, fairy lights), under-cabinet lighting

Low/Medium

300-800

Bedside lamps, wall sconces, hallway night lights, small pendant lights e.g. above a dining table

Medium

800-1500

General room lighting e.g. living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, ceiling lighting fixtures, table lamps, vanity mirrors

Medium/High

1500-2500

Kitchen task lighting, bathroom vanity lighting, home office lighting, dining room chandeliers

High

2500-5000

Large open-plan room lighting, high ceilings with recessed lighting, bright task lighting

The easiest way to understand the performance of any of our ceiling lighting fittings is to look at the level of lumens listed in each of the product descriptions.

If lumens aren’t listed then look at the “Bulb (watts)” and use that value in the following table to get an idea of the maximum brightness you’re likely to get:

(If lumens aren’t listed then it will be up to you to buy the lightbulbs but you can only use bulbs up to the maximum watts listed for each product.)

Choose the right ambiance

Once you’ve decided on the brightness levels that are best for you, it’s important to decide on the ambiance or feel you want from the light.

This is known as “colour temperature”, which is measured in Kelvin and might sound complicated but is actually quite simple.

If you want a warm feel to the light, which is what most people buy and prefer for living areas, bedrooms and other places where they want to relax then aim for a colour temperature of 3,000 Kelvin or lower.

Most lights in our ceiling lighting fittings collection are at 3,000 Kelvin.

However, if the priority is bright lighting to illuminate an area where you’re working, such as a kitchen or other workspace, then consider a whiter, cooler temperature, such as 4,000 Kelvin.

FAQs

Do you need an electrician to fit light fittings?

If you're simply changing a light shade or swapping like-for-like fittings, you might not need an electrician. However, for new wiring, complex installations, or if you’re unsure in any way, always hire a qualified electrician to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

What is the rule for ceiling lights?

A general rule is to position lights for a ceiling centrally in a room for even illumination and ensure they complement the function of that space. Additionally, in larger rooms, multiple light sources, or layered lighting, can prevent dark spots and improve ambiance.

What is layered lighting?

Layered lighting is a design approach that combines different types of lighting—ambient, task, and accent—to create a balanced and functional space. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination, task lighting focuses on specific activities, and accent lighting highlights architectural features or decor. Using a mix of these layers enhances depth, mood, and usability in a room.

Can I change a ceiling light fitting myself?

If you’re replacing light fixtures for the ceiling with similar ones and you have basic electrical knowledge, you might be able to do it yourself. However, if wiring needs to be altered, or if you are unsure in any way, hiring a professional is safer and ensures compliance with local regulations.

What is the rule of 3 lights?

The rule of three suggests using three light sources in a room to create balanced illumination, which is typically a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. This approach enhances depth, warmth and functionality in a space.

How do I calculate how many light fittings I need?

A common method is to multiply the room’s area (length × width in square metres) by 250–300 lumens per square metre to determine the total required brightness. Divide this by the lumen output of each light fitting to estimate how many you need. However, this is a very rough guide as personal tastes and preferences need to be factored in as well.

How many lights do I need in my bedroom?

Most bedrooms benefit from a central ceiling light plus additional sources, such as bedside lamps or wall lights. For larger bedrooms, multiple ceiling lights, or layered lighting, may be needed to provide even illumination.

How much does an electrician charge per light fitting in the UK or Ireland?

In the UK, electricians typically charge from £40–£100 per light fitting, depending on complexity and location. In Ireland, costs can range from €50–€120 per fitting, with additional charges for rewiring or ceiling alterations.

How do I know what size ceiling light I need?

A simple and very rough guide is to add the room’s length and width (in metres) and convert the total to centimetres to get the ideal light diameter. For example, a 4m × 3m room would suit a ceiling light around 70cm in diameter.

How low should my ceiling light hang?

In rooms with standard 2.4m ceilings, ceiling lights should hang at least 2.1m above the floor. Over dining tables or kitchen islands, lights can hang lower, typically 70–90cm above the surface.

Are LED bulbs a good idea for ceiling lights?

Yes, LED ceiling lights are energy-efficient, long-lasting, and available in various styles and brightness levels. They consume less electricity and generate less heat than traditional bulbs, making them a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice. However, LED bulbs are not created equally and cheaper ones will often fail prematurely. This is why we recommend and sell Well Lit bulbs, which are manufactured ethically and have a five-year guarantee as standard.
